Saint John was born in Russia in 1690. Peter the Great reigned at the time. In 1711 war broke out between Russia and Turkey in which Saint John fought. The Saint was captured by a Turk and became his slave and was carried away to the Turk's homeland in Prokopi Asia Minor. The Saint accepted the intolerable oppression and humiliation of the Turks, who were trying to make him change his faith. His virtuous behavior made his master favour him and let him free to perform his religious duties. The work he was commissioned to do was to care for the animals, which he performed with love and willingness. At age 40 became seriously ill and died. On the 27th May 1730 his burial ceremony took place. Hi master gave permission to the Christians to bury him as a Christian . He was buried in the church of St. George and his holy relic was placed in a marble urn . In 1832 however, the corpse was thrown out of the urn in a pile of wood to be burned by the soldiers of the Turkish Chatkeral Oglou Osman Pasha, who had also robbed all temple dedications. The relic remained intact and not burned, this frightened the Turks who fled the area and the body of the saint was placed back into the urn. The miracles that take place in the shrine that houses the relics of the saint are known quickly to the public and many sick people of unknown religion run to the shrine to seek cure. A major pilgrimage is created in the area that dominates the Central Cappadocia until 1924.

During the population exchange of 1924 , the Christian inhabitants of Prokopi village Asia Minor, took with them the relics of the saint and transferred them into their new home of New Prokopi in Evia. The holy relic was transferred to Evia in October 1924 aboard the ship " Basil Destounis ." In 1930 a magnificent church was founded in honor of the saint, which was completed in 1951 . Many are the saint's miracles since, but great emotion causes a humble cane that stands next to a silver reliquary of the saint, silent witness a miracle.

The pilgrim, leaving the Pilgrimage of Saint John, returns mentally refreshed and calm.
