A full day tour of Heraklion and the famous Palace of Knossos, which takes you along the Northern coastal highway to visit the lovely town of Rethymno and the most picturesque town of Crete - Chania with its pretty harbor, the Venetian buildings and the Turkish Mosques.
Meet in the morning at the starting point, the statue of Eleftherios Veizelos at Eleftherias Square (Plateia Eleftherias) downtown Heraklion:
The tour of the Palace of Knossos offers you the opportunity to discover the first advanced European civilization and see the oldest throne in Europe, a prehistoric theatre, water-management systems, sophisticated ventilation technologies, huge storerooms, reconstructed buildings, frescoes, storage jars and sacred symbols. The Palace of Knossos is the most important archaeological site on the island, as well as a place full of myths and legends (Theseus, the Minotaur with the labyrinth of Greek Mythology). It is the oldest palace in Europe and one of the four Minoan palaces. It acted as the administrative and religious centre of Minoan (Bronze Age) Crete. The legendary powerful king of Knossos was Minos, son of Zeus and Europa. The layout of the palace was so complicated that the courtiers needed a plan to move through it. Flourishing between 3,000BC and 1,400BC when it strangely disappeared, only to be discovered again in 1878 by Minos Kalokairinos a Cretan merchant and antiquarian.
After the Kalokairinos discovery, several people attempted to continue the work, and Heinrich Schliemann had previously showed an interest, but it was not until March 16, 1900 that archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans, an English gentleman of independent means, was able to purchase the entire site and conduct massive excavations. After the tour of the archaeological site of Knossos ends, board the bus and drive to Rethymno. This city is blessed with beauty and decorated with renaissance colours, while the inhabitants are well known for their hospitality and the traditional way of life. The old town, full of small houses embraced by the magical atmosphere, the spectacular stronghold named ''Fortetza'' and a walk along the longest beach of Crete, are sights you must not miss. After lunch continue to the City of Chania for a walk along the waterfront of its magnificent old harbour with its beautiful lighthouse, the trademark of the city. Chania is made of two parts, the old town and the larger modern town. Walk around the town, visit the 'leather lane' and the Market Hall and explore the Splantzia square behind the harbour and the Venetian Arsenals. Many more interesting walking spots of the beaten track reflect the mix of influences that has given Chania its unique atmosphere.
Later in the day, board the coach and return to Heraklion Town at the same drop off point, the statue of Eleftherios Venizelos at Eleftherias Square.
